Chatham Marketplace: Pittsboro, NC   Write a Review

Chatham Marketplace is a co-op grocery located in Chatham Mills, an 80,000-square-foot former textile mill located just north of the courthouse circle in historic Pittsboro, NC. Chatham Marketplace is committed to bringing our customers a full-range of exceptionally fresh and nutritious whole foods. Our market sells a full line of sustainable and certified organic produce (over a quarter of it from local growers), grocery, deli, bakery, bulk and dairy items, meats, amazing sandwiches, artisan cheeses, hot bar and salad bar items, beer, wine, great coffee and health and beauty aids! Our Mission Chatham Marketplace will strengthen the health and well-being of our owners and our community by: Providing a full range of exceptional organic produce and healthy, environmentally sound grocery products Supporting Chatham County’s economy by buying and selling local products as much as possible Creating a fulfilling experience and caring environment for our employees, customers, and suppliers Supporting the cooperative principles of sustainability, education, democracy, and investment in our community A Brief History In April 2003, Melissa Frey and Tami Schwerin met at a playground in Pittsboro with their children to flip through the Business Plan Melissa had created for a cooperative grocery store–she had long been thinking Chatham needed a store like this. Tami was immediately inspired and jumped into the fire (aka project) with complete commitment! With their complementary strengths the idea moved forward quickly and Chatham Marketplace was incorporated as a cooperative on June 5, 2003. The first ownership shares were sold at a community potluck/information session in July of 2003 and significant local investment was also secured to allow the grassroots project to get noticed and supported by the national food co-op network. Weaver Street Market’s management team was outstanding and a glowing example of cooperation in the help they offered us in numerous areas. All told, more than $435,000 was raised by the local community to help finance the million dollar project. The Board of Directors and many volunteers worked tirelessly for two and a half years organizing and attending events, creating and maintaining a website, developing a purchasing policy and local farm protocol and doing everything possible to spread the word to garner support for the Co-op vision. After 14 months of looking at many locations around Pittsboro, a lease was signed for retail space in Chatham Mills on April 1, 2005. Our full-time General Manager, Mary DeMare Stivers, was hired on June 1, 2005 to ready the Co-op for operations and handle equipment ordering and installation while Project Manager, Melissa Frey, kept the leasehold improvements moving forward and continued focusing on marketing and owner services. After many delays and near lost sanity, Chatham Marketplace opened its doors on Thursday, May 18, 2006. And it’s been open every day since from 8am-8pm!

In January of 2002, the Co-op reorganized as a cooperative corporation. The Co-op is now a huge success, nationally recognized and awarded. Elm City Market: New Haven, CT   Write a Review

Many New Haveners have to travel outside the city to purchase groceries; many other local residents, lacking the means to travel outside the city, must go without key staples and affordable fresh healthy food. New Haven is a food town to the core. Yet the city that invented the hamburger, perfected the pizza, and boasts the densest downtown in Connecticut currently has no full-service grocery store. In late 2009 a group of property owners and concerned citizens came together to fix this problem. We have been working tirelessly to develop an independent, member-owned grocery store that will serve the unique needs of New Haven. As a hybrid co-op that provides local, natural, organic, and conventional products and groceries, Elm City Market will reflect the needs of the community in a way that no national chain could in order to provide the sustenance that New Haven needs now. Everyone, both members and non-members alike, will be welcome to shop at the market. However, as a food co-op, we can’t exist without our members. By joining us today, you’ll be able to play a critical role in the development of New Haven’s food co-op.

Ever’man Natural Foods Co-op, Inc: Pensacola, FL   Write a Review

Ever’man Natural Foods was founded in 1973 by a group of people who wanted to have access to wholesome, nutritious food at a reasonable cost. The small group discovered that they could get their essentials such as whole wheat flour at a lower price by pooling their resources and purchasing their foods in bulk. Throughout the years, more and more people joined the cooperative. Our co-op remained a volunteer organization until 15 years ago when Ever’man hired its first paid employees. In the last 15 years, we have outgrown four locations and are now located in an 11,000 sq. ft. building in the heart of downtown Pensacola. We currently have over 50 employees and serve more than 12,000 active members. We offer a healthy alternative to what can be found at conventional grocery stores. Because we believe in the importance of wholesome products, our buyers apply a strict philosophy when purchasing everything from vitamins & supplements to chips, baby foods, and dairy products. We strive to buy organic whenever possible and avoid artificial ingredients in all our products. We have a full-service cafe style deli, including breakfast foods and a smoothie/juice bar. With a modest start as a buying club in a garage, we now claim a vibrant 20,000 square foot Market and Café. In 2002, we expanded our location by adding a 2,825 square foot Café. Again in 2004 we expanded by opening a satellite café, Good Foods Chapter 2, in the downtown Lexington Public Library. Our most recent expansion in 2009 was completed on time and under budget as we celebrated with a Grand Reopening in February 2010. The renovated store features an artisan bakery, more produce, expanded grocery selections, and a beautifully renovated Café with larger bathrooms. Good Foods is a dynamic cooperative today because of our dedication to serve our growing and changing ownership. We invite you to walk into our Market & Café and be greeted by a bountiful selection of fresh, crisp produce. We are proud to support numerous Kentucky producers and farmers. From posters throughout our Market you can see who is growing your food. Our focus is on natural, organic, and whole foods. The Grain Train began in 1971 as a buying club, and then moved to tiny retail quarters on the second floor of a local bookstore. Another move and 25 years in a small historic building in the downtown area, the co-op and membership grew. After years of fund-raising and active member participation in developing a building fund and a plan, the Grain Train built and moved to its current 4,500 square-foot storefront on the western edge of downtown in 2002. Linden Hills Co-op: Minneapolis, MN   Write a Review

The idea for a natural foods cooperative in the Linden Hills neighborhood of Minneapolis’s Lakes district was first considered in 1975, by a small group of neighborhood residents interested in having access to organic, local and natural food. After a series of planning meetings and initial fundraising, a small space was secured and the new co-op opened on March 12, 1976. At the end of Linden Hills Co-op’s first fiscal year, $101.69 in profit was divided among the twenty-four founding members. In the thirty years since then, Linden Hills Co-op has moved and expanded its offerings three times while remaining the neighborhood’s primary grocer–”big enough to meet your needs; small enough to meet your neighbors.” With a full service deli, great selection of locally made and locally raised foods, many choices for different dietary needs, and an inviting outdoor courtyard, the co-op serves as a community gathering place–with groceries. Linden Hills Natural Home, which is owned by the consumer members of Linden Hills Co-op, offers organic bed and bath linens, juicers, organic gardening supplies, housewares, air and water purifiers, cloth diapers, natural baby clothes, nontoxic paints and cleaning supplies, Fair Trade and locally made gifts–for sustainable homes and healthy families. Located in a turn-of-the-century house across the street from the co-op, the store is proud to support Fair Trade artisans, Minnesota makers, certified organic and sustainable fibers, creative use of recycled materials, and practical solutions for healthier homes like safe cleaners and paints.

Maple City Market’s story begins in the early ’70s when faculty and students from Goshen College, along with other community members, began a buying club. In 1976 the buying club moved to Jefferson Street into an old car garage. It continued to function mostly as a buying club, until five years later when the buying club opened a storefront. The location was still small, but allowed for gradual improvements and additions. Over the years our co-op has expanded and moved, and Maple City Market continues to be a viable, growing cooperative, responding to a strong, supportive membership. Our mission is to provide high quality, healthful food and other products with a focus on economic and environmental sustainability. Our fresh baked breads and grab-and-go deli soups and sandwiches are a favorite. Customers love our fair trade coffee, tea, chocolate, and sugar. Mountain View Market: Las Cruces, NM   Write a Review

Mountain View Market is located in Las Cruces, New Mexico, just 40 miles from the Mexican border, in the Mesilla Valley. Our community benefits from a rich cultural history, sunshine virtually every day of the year, amazing views of the dramatic Organ Mountains, and an active agricultural heritage fed by the Rio Grande River. In 1975 on the New Mexico State University campus, a group of students decided to pool their resources and create a buying club in order to purchase whole foods at bulk prices. Very soon the operation became so large that it was more practical to open a store. A little building (originally a house) on Foster Street in Las Cruces became home to Organ Mountain Co-op. The store has always been open to the public. Our co-op has also gone through many name changes since 1975, from Organ Mountain Co-operative, to Co-op Market, to Mountain View Market. Most everyone in our community just call us “the co-op.” Today, our cooperative is run mostly by paid staff, but there is a renewed commitment to return to core co-op values. Member workers are involved more at the co-op as well as local farmers and artisans who are able to sell their wares to their community members. We are proud that our store also serves as an informal gathering place for many people seeking to build strong community in our area.

Oryana Natural Foods Market: Traverse City, MI   Write a Review

Oryana Natural Foods Market is Northern Michigan’s oldest and most trusted source for organic and healthy foods. From the freshest produce to home-baked scones; all-natural soaps to bulk organic cherries, Oryana is the only place you’ll need to shop for your family’s needs. Oryana began as a food-buying club back in 1973. Since then, it has grown into a $8.8 million, 6,500 square foot full service co-op that serves northern Michigan and beyond. More than thirty years later, Oryana is now the largest source of organic products in northern Michigan. When customers walk in the door, (and remember, you don’t have to be a member to shop at Oryana, everyone is welcome), you can be assured of Oryana’s commitment to quality. Our mission is to provide high quality food produced in ecologically sound ways at fair value to members and the community. Oryana was the first food co-op in the country to be designated a Certified Organic Retailer, which means: all organic products are in compliance with the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) final rule on organics, implementing protocols to insure no commingling with nonorganic product, and that our employees are properly trained in the handling of organic product. By taking these extra steps, Oryana ensures that the chain of organic integrity is preserved. Our deli uses healthy, high-quality ingredients to create a unique selection of sandwiches, organic salads, entrees and baked goods–easy to grab and go. Try one of our specialties, like the tuna pesto sandwich on fresh Stone House Bread. We also offer organic and fair traded coffee and tea and the best scones in town. We have a full selection of vitamins, homeopathic products and natural remedies. Our experienced staff can help you find holistic therapies from immune strengthening herb teas to healing aromatherapy products. Our natural skin care, bath products and cosmetics will treat your body and spirit to a clean, beautiful transformation. We also offer a large selection of easy-to-identify products including: wheat-free, gluten-free, low-sodium, Kosher, lactose-free, dairy-free and vegan. Although you don’t need to be a member to shop at Oryana, by joining you’ll have a vote in the co-op’s operation and direction, as well as enjoy special sales and discounts. People’s Food Co-op (Kalamazoo): Kalamazoo, MI   Write a Review

People’s Food Co-op of Kalamazoo is a consumer-owned cooperative grocery store, bringing a full array of natural products and healthful foods to the community at reasonable prices. Economic pressures and popular movements in the late sixties and early seventies led to the creation of a great many food co-ops across Michigan and the country. Confronted with few choices for unprocessed, whole foods, people decided to band together and buy in bulk directly from producers and distributors. What has evolved from this over the past thirty-plus years is a thriving natural foods industry with the co-ops at the core. We were incorporated in 1973, and moved into our current space on Burdick Street in 1978. People’s Food Co-op is owned by a growing number of individuals and families in our community. Though we encourage member-ownership, anyone may shop at the People’s Food Co-op. You’re sure to find high-quality, whole foods at People’s with a focus on locally grown and organic products. We have the area’s finest year-round selection of organically grown fruits, vegetables and sprouts. For the lunch crowd we offer sandwiches and soups, single serving drinks and yogurt, dips, chips, cookies, brownies, fresh fruits and vegetables. We carry a wide selection of vitamin, herbal and nutritional supplements to enhance your healthy lifestyle. In addition, we carry a full line of grocery and snack items, and refrigerated and frozen foods. We look forward to your visit.

Silver City Food Co-op: Silver City, NM   Write a Review

In 1974 Silver City was a small, off-the-beaten-track, copper- mining and cattle-grazing town in southwestern New Mexico. The Silver City Food Coop traces its roots to that year, when a handful of modern-day pioneers bonded together to form a buying club. One year later, the group opened its doors to members only, for limited hours, on the back porch of the house across the street from our present location. In 1977 the co-op moved to a storefront at 108 East Broadway open to members and non-members alike and hired an employee/coordinator to run the business and supervise volunteers (who traded work for a discount). In 1985 the co-op moved to its present location in the heart of historic downtown Silver City and began going through some major changes. Until the 90′s the co-op was dependent on volunteer labor, but that system didn’t sit well with the IRS and so it was discontinued along with shelf discounts for members and the original lifetime “dime memberships.” We’ve grown a lot and gone through many more changes. Since the mid-90′s we have increased our organic selection in all departments. On July 11, 2003 we became the first store in New Mexico to be certified organic by the New Mexico Organic Commodities Commission. And today the jewel in our crown is our local and organic produce department.

Ypsilanti Food Co-op: Ypsilanti, MI   Write a Review

The Ypsilanti Food Cooperative began like most food co-ops, as a buying club organized by volunteers that outgrew its borrowed church basements. We’ve been blessed with outstanding grass roots support throughout the more than 30 years we have served our small community. The co-op is currently located in historic Depot Town; and our building, known as the Mill Works Building, was originally a foundry that made grinding wheels for flour. While recycling and reducing waste have always been basic to our store, in 2005 we installed 4 solar panels to our roof to replace some of our energy consumption with renewable energy. In 2005 we also acquired the bakery next door. Most of the work to reclaim and renovate our space was done by volunteers in keeping with the ambience of our 1840s building. Many of our wood shelves have also been custom-made by volunteers, some from reclaimed ash eradicated by the Emerald Ash Borer. In addition, most of the capital was derived from our member owners in the form of member shares and loans. Our product line includes a large and varied inventory for our small size. Highlights include organic bulk grains, spices and coffees, produce, hot soups, sandwiches and other deli items, homemade granola and baked goods, and fresh sourdough breads baked in our wood fired brick oven. But it’s more than selling groceries that keeps our community alive! Our volunteers truly excel in community outreach, fundraising, and fun special events that celebrate our unique community. We are proud to celebrate the arts, food, young adult and elementary school education, and our community’s heritage. All these volunteer efforts are community-building in action, and strong evidence of the passion Ypsilanti Food Co-op folks feel for keeping good, natural organic food available at a reasonable price in our town.
